The Power of Knowing, Part 2

1. We can know freedom from sin, v. 18

forgiveness…freedom…fullness

Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.

                    -I John 3:4-10

The problem with habitual sin biblically speaking…

a) violates the law of God
b) nullifies the work of Christ
c) grieves the Holy Spirit

“He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”
                  -Colossians 1:13-14

domain- ability
Kingdom- accomplishment

2. We can know a biblical worldview, v. 19

Two things to notice here…

a) “We are from God…”
b) “…and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one."

“All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
                    -2 Corinthians 5:18-21

3. We can know what is true, v. 20-21

“When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.”
                   -John 17:1-3

Mental worship…

What do you find comforting about God?
If God were to give you a one sentence warning of what you should be on guard for, what would that sentence say?
Are you comfortable with God making His appeal through you?
When is the last time you shared the Gospel with someone?
In what area would you like God to give you understanding today?
